Aaron Kowalski - Inside-Out
Mixed Media
18" x 20"
Aaron is a happy energetic, positive man. He has always been a visual person with an exceptional eye for color. Many of his works exude an interesting, heavy handedness and denseness. He loves line work, too. Aaron is living with a significant speech, language and sensory disorder. This has allowed him to bring his own unique expressive qualities to the art making process. His work demonstrates a knowledge and deep understanding of line work and realism. His pieces draw in the viewer and leave them inspired for more.
This physiology forward self portrait of Aaron depicts life when he is upset. The colors, each tied to a physiological happening, exemplify how he literally feels on the inside. His riotous hair reaches toward the sky as if to pull itself out. His beautiful eyes sit cockeyed upon his fiery face. One frantic eye wide-open and one serene, both searching for rescue. Aaron says that he helps himself through these feelings by breathing in deep and exhaling slowly. Which he has chosen to illustrate through the calm cool hues of his lips. The culmination of colors and senses translate into a truly exciting and moving piece.

Abigail Branham - Engaging Uncaging
Pastel
16" x 20"
Abigail has repeatedly demonstrated how she can express herself in the artwork that she has presented over the years. Whether it is in the soft colors of watercolor pastels, the bold strokes of acrylic paint, the many textures of clay or the abstract look of collages, she shines through.
Although Abigail is non-verbal, she always seems to get her comments conveyed during her time together with her fellow artists and instructors in class sessions. Her time of creativity each week offers her the self confidence to push herself in anything that she needs to accomplish in daily life and into the future.
Have you ever been to the zoo? I love it there. The animals are so cute, even the big scary ones, like the tiger. But if you are lucky enough to be at the zoo when the tigers are released from their cages into their habitat, you will see how engaging they can be. One comes toward me to greet me. His giant paws plop silently along the ground as he approaches. His colorful stripes are striking and beam in the sunlight. As he stands in front of me, his large, wonderful eyes are locked on mine. He seems to be happy that we are together now. So am I.

Adam Moehlig - Lines of Intention
Mixed Media
18" x 22"
Adam's work shows off his architectural style very clearly. His abstract work is very orderly, preferring form and shape layered together. His designs are very often geometric, even his more organic subjects, such as lush forests, are very regimented in construction. One can tell by looking at Adam's work how precisely he enjoys working, and the amount of care that goes into a painting. One of his favorite mediums to use for his detail work is paint markers, with their thin and opaque line quality, an artist is able to add details that might be very difficult with a brush.
One of his favorite colors to use in his paintings is black, which leads to a very striking look that immediately identifies his paintings.
This piece will take your eyes on a fabulous journey. The colorful shapes in the background lay a foundation for the focal point of my piece - the lines. I chose a variety of colors for my line making. The intertwined lines weave over and under, crisscross, and connect. They run horizontal, vertical, parallel, and perpendicular. It might be difficult to imagine a work of art with no lines. Here you can imagine an artwork loaded with lines and experience how wonderful that can be.

Alyssa Velting - Glam Art
Acrylic Paint and Posca Markers on Fabric
My name is Alyssa Velting. I am from Grand Rapids. I went to Wyoming Public Schools and now I am a part of the Grandville Transition Program. I started making art in school. Now, I do art all of the time at home. It fills up most of my free time. When I create art, I usually start by finding an inspiring picture. I try to draw it and then I paint it to add color. I search for images of animals, specifically dogs, pigs, and horses. I am a true animal lover. I try to create a realistic image of the animal through my art. I love animals because they seem to understand how I feel inside. I want other people to know they are understood by animals too, so hopefully my art shows that. The materials that I prefer to use are water color paints, markers, and pencils. You will notice that my color palette is bright and usually includes pink, blue, purple, and red. The brighter the better.

Anton Fiscelli - A Walkable Wonder
Paper Collage with Ink
26" x 32"
Diagnosed at an early age with autism, Anton struggled to make sense of the world around him. All the sights and sounds of his environment most often sent him into a tailspin. When he was young he showed no interest in coloring or painting as he had difficulties grasping writing utensils. It was suggested that he learn to use a keyboard as he may never learn to write. Through hard work and determination he learned to print and his love of art developed after that. He enjoys working with pens, pencils, markers, and painting. Today Anton is a happy young man who, in addition to creating art, loves to sing and dance.
My collage is inspired by my many trips to Ann Arbor, visiting my sister, who has lived there since her college days, and my brother-in-law. Mixed in this bustling college town are tall buildings, hotels, restaurants, many old homes, and big, beautiful trees. You can feel how vibrant this city is with the mix of the new and old, businesses and neighborhoods, and the parks and college. It is a favorite place of mine. A beautiful and exciting walkable wonder!

Brin DeVries - The Power of Advocacy
Acrylic Paint Pour on Canvas
Growing up, art was not enjoyable for me. I was told to do something I couldn't do. It ended up being someone else doing it for me. When I got older, I learned that I really did like art, but that I just needed to find the right technique. I got into photography and learned I had a good eye for detail and color. I then discovered paint pouring and other forms of abstract art. I have now been doing paint pouring for a few years and even make custom pieces.
The left side represents what happens when you don’t advocate for yourself and for others. The feelings that were the motivation behind this side include frustration, isolation, exclusion, disappointment, anger, and confusion. It can feel like there are people that aren’t paying attention to what I have to say. The piece is dark with dull colors. Notice the white trying to poke through the black. This represents the moments when I try to speak up, but it is too late, or people don’t want to listen. When people don’t listen to what I have to say, I feel like “what is the point?”
The right side represents what happens when you do advocate for yourself and for others. The feelings that were the motivation for this side include empowerment, happiness, inclusion, bravery, and encouragement. It can feel like you are actually making progress in finding independence and establishing yourself as a person, just like everybody else. The piece is really bright and vibrant. Notice the colors trying to cover the black. The multitude of colors can represent what happens when you have more than one person advocating for multiple groups. When we all come together, we can cause more change than any one person could do by themselves.

Carl Meyer - Jack Pine Dances and Shines
Acrylic
24" x 18"
My enjoyment of art has included: Art from found natural materials - hand-made wooden flutes and whistles, walking sticks with carved miniature animals for decoration, plank carving, watercolor, acrylic and textured 3D storyboard.
This piece was inspired when volunteering at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in New Mexico within the 3 million acre Gila National Park. Jack Pine is a fire species with a rough texture. Fire causes the cones to open and release their seeds, renewing the forest. Ash nourishes not only Jack pine, but also many other species of flora and fauna that fit together to make up this kind of forest. It is natural that there have been many fires throughout history. Human activity from more than a thousand years has been made visible from the air by fires.

Carly Guy - In the Moment
Mixed Media
16" x 20"
Carly Guy is an enthusiastic, friendly, and fun-loving artist, and this translates into artwork full of vibrant color. Her pieces often feature bright mixed media images that pop off the page. She especially loves depicting sea life and flowers because they offer endless opportunities for color, intricate detail, and whimsy. Carly's images make people smile.
Carly lives with Coffin-Lowry Syndrome, a very rare condition that causes her to fall without warning. Undaunted by these literal "ups and downs," Carly focuses on the upside of life, working weekday mornings at the Oakland University preschool and also taking part in Special Olympics, softball, Best Buddies, and dance classes, in addition to her classes at Paint a Miracle.
Carly has created an invitation into the delight of the changing seasons. This illustrated calm of transition is almost meditative. She has somehow made the cool deep blue feel cozy and welcoming. As if to say, "come be with me." The beautiful contrast between mighty branches and delicate snow forms a spectacular backdrop for the dancing leaves as they fall away in the change of the season.

Courtney Cyrkiel - Morning Has Broken
Acrylic
12" x 12"
Court is a kind, thoughtful, and talented artist living with Asperger's. Interested in exploring different concepts and mediums, his mastery of the principles of art and design are reflected in his work.
From a young age of 18 months old, Court has demonstrated his artistic talents. As a toddler, he would sit and draw smiley faces for hours. As time went on, his smiley faces began to have human likeness: nostrils, eyes with pupils and lashes, lips with lip lines, and ears with ear canals.
Court loves animals, and they seem to love him too. He is often called the dog whisperer. Much of Court's art is of animals, and he loves to paint animals of all kinds. He also loves to go fishing, which has become one of his favorite art subjects.
Court did not speak until he was almost three years old. He is still a man of very few words to this day. Although it is difficult for Court to express himself with words, his art speaks for him.
I am most impressed by the sunlit silhouette of the tall trees. The way that the morning sun creates the blush-colored foliage and tender ground beneath them is also a strong feature. This piece makes me feel peaceful and calm. I wish that I could greet each morning with this image and feeling.
